Oh, I see what you’re saying! I totally agree that there are guys (and girls) out there who think that going over the top is the way to someone’s heart, but what they don’t realize is that in those situations the person giving the gift is really giving away his/her power. Lance is the expert on this, but that’s what a lot of PUAs try to beat into the brains of would-be pimps.

It’s true in many circumstances, as well. To give a non-relationship example, I was at a jobs seminar yesterday (I can’t stay in school forever), and the speaker said NEVER let a company know how much you want to work for them specifically because you’re giving away your bargaining power. If we’re making an analogy to relationships, that’s true–in the beginning. I do feel that once you are solidly a couple of years into the relationship, it’s way more acceptable to do things that might be considered overboard if they were done right away.

That said, in my circumstance, our V-Day dinner is being paid for out of money a friend owed us for letting him share a hotel room with us on a trip, and we set a price limit on the gifts. So while the gifts themselves are a surprise, no one’s pulling a power play.

Yes, Honey, but typically, when someone goes all overboard, the other person is like, uh, WTF? and then attraction starts to wane. I’ve done the whole pulling all the stops before but that got me nowhere. I used to enjoy it and still do to some point but I have definitely toned it down about 100 notches. Oh, and he who cares the least wins. And I’m definitely not the first to state that.

I agree with you, Lilly--although I think that one reason to be in a couple is to have a good time, so if you get your rocks off pulling out all the stops, what's the harm? I just think it should be meaningful and particular to YOUR relationship. And, for the record, the BF and I are not practicing Christians, but we give Christmas presents, too! Valentine’s Day is pretty much just an excuse to have a good time as a couple. It’s almost like an atheist partaking in Christmas – for the only reason to get together with family; or being Chinese and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day – for the only reason to get drunk. If you pull out all the stops, you’re lame.

Sorry to disappoint, Lance. Though as exes go you're ideal! For V-Day: Well, on the actual day I'll be in Flagstaff, though I did make a funny sex checklist to e-mail him. On Friday we're having sushi and then going home, exchanging presents, and having crazy monkey sex.
