The Weekly: Penelope Trunk, iPad Porn, Outsourcing Online Dating, Ryan Keely

Some fun links this week. First and foremost, one of my absolute fav bloggers got married last weekend, Penelope Trunk. Please stop by her blog and offer congrats and give her some love: Turning Point. Her wedding was intimate and a bit non-traditional, to say the least, which I thought was awesome. Includes pics.

Okay, on to the news of the weird and ridiculous in dating and sex. Match.com just turned 15…WHOA…and they released a survey that says that 17% of couples who get married these days meet through online dating. More people meet through online dating than from meeting in bars an clubs. Does that mean pickup is a dying art form? I hope not. Read an article from HuffPo about it.

Speaking of online dating, have you considered outsourcing your online dating to a professional? Life Hacker Timothy Ferriss has blogged about this extensively. You can read an excellent interview on Seduction Chronicles where he outsourced his online dating to a bunch of foreign teams for a couple of hundred bucks with excellent results. Want to go a step further? Check out this story about Matt Prager, who will actually take over your profile and pretend to be you during the initial email phases of online dating, with outstanding results. I totally don’t have a problem with dating by proxy and if I had the dough (and the need) I’d outsource my online dating too. Why? I see the initial email phase as a total bullshit phase. The point of it is to quickly qualify and set an appointment, ie the first date. Once you’re on the first date that’s when the real action takes place. I would definitely hire a professional to set the appointments.

Here’s a fun one. The Securities and Exchange Commission probed 33 employees and found that many were downloading porn at work. One employee was caught downloading porn for 8 hours a day. I’m all for downloading porn, but not when it’s the regulators of the financial system.

Moving right along, a major porn company has a way to stream porn onto the iPad already. Nice! I’m getting one of these at my work place and I will be downloading porn at work. You’ve got to love Internet porn, they’re at the vanguard of Web technology.

    That 17% figure is right in line with my life experience. I’ve met 12% of my post-divorce long term girlfriends online, and 88% of my girlfriends in real life. (i.e. in ten years of dating, I’ve met 1 girlfriend online, and 7 in real life, mainly at parties thrown by friends)

    Why waste time online dating if the return is so low?

    For me, online is a high volume and nearly zero cost game…so even though the ROI is low (17% isn’t that bad, actually) it costs you almost nothing in terms of time and money to utilize that channel. Going to bars and parties all the time costs a tremendous amount comparatively.

    First, how cute is this to find Lance celebrating marriage? Sweet!

    I was really surprised to see that Penelope Trunk had posted photos of her new hubby and kids — considering what she has written about this in previous posts. So, it was interesting to see how she changed her way of thinking about the Internet and privacy.

    And of course, I LOVED her wedding post and photos!
