My job interview for the faculty position was Thursday, and while it’s very tough (for me, anyway) to gauge people’s reactions when I can’t see them, I can say that I dropped the names I wanted to drop, mentioned the aspects of my skills I wanted to mention, and we’ll see what happens! When I e-mailed my dissertation chair and told him about the interview, he immediately cleared space in his schedule so we could chat on the phone, nail down my talking points, and practice some questions, and it was definitely a big help.
They say they’ll get back to me in a week or two and let me know if I’m advancing on to the next round or not. I’m solid either way because 1) it was such an unbelievable coup to get interviewed at all that I’m riding high, and 2) if I don’t advance then it means that Jake is free to look for a job out of state in the new year. Either outcome is pretty awesome by me! Continued

So it is awesome news all around these days (sorry for neglecting you, my peeps!). First Jake and I went to Illinois to visit his grandparents for Thanksgiving and then I have been catching up because it is the busiest time of year for me at work. I hate that my busiest time is around the holidays, which are supposed to be about relaxation and fun, but what can you do? Anyway, that’s not the good news – here’s a recap of recent events:
Illinois
Illinois was good. As I’ve mentioned previously, Jake and I avoid his parents and brother, but we got some QT with the grandparents, aunt, and cousin. The biggest surprise (at least for Jake, I suspected this would happen and tried to tell him but he didn’t believe me) was that the family decided to give us our Christmas gifts while we were actually there, to watch us opening them. They say that the holidays are a time for family – well, maybe. Sort of. Though our relationships with our families are far from typical. Is there anyone who is typical?
This weekend my best friend from grad school was in town because her boyfriend’s parents live here, and they ended up staying with us because his parents didn’t have room (and also because we’re obviously cooler to stay with). Sarcasm and alcohol, just like old times…
Oh, and their 6 1/2 month old baby.
He was very adorable (if periodically cranky) and I shocked everyone when they went out for coffee and left me with him – apparently she and her boyfriend were deciding how much they’d bet that the baby was screaming when they walked back in…but he was sound asleep in my arms. Awww. Continued

Well I don’t know about you all, but this week keeps getting better and better.
State Fair Fun
Saturday we decided to go to the Arizona State Fair. This was, I think, the third year in a row that we’ve gone, and as usual we had a great time! We did some of the rides and games, Jake bought me a new semiprecious stone for a metal torque/choker that he’d bought me at the same booth last year (I’m liking this tradition), and – the theme of this year’s fair visit – ate everything in sight. Yum, food. Continued

Lots of fun things going on right now for me! First of all, I received my diploma in the mail – so it’s Dr. Honey to you!!! Very exciting.
In celebration, I threw away the 5 full drafts of my dissertation with my committee members’ feedback that I’d been saving “just in case.” The BF noticed the giant box was gone out of the middle of our living room when he got home, and was very pleased. I have some other things that can probably be thrown away now, as well (chapter drafts, my proposal stuff, some comprehensive exams drafts and notes) but they’re currently “away” so it’s not as urgent. Well, we had a fantatic time, lost all our money, ate too much food, and got sore feet walking around. That’s Vegas! Here are the highlights of our time:
