Our Christmas 2009 was pretty awesome. The best part was hanging out with friends – one of Jake’s friends had us over for dinner on Wednesday night, with plenty of wine drinking and some board games, and last night we went over to one of my friend’s houses for Christmas dinner (and the hostess was Filipino so there was tons of amazing food). Not to mention that my friend’s dad is extremely wealthy and had some projects in mind that led to him asking for Jake’s business card, always a good thing.
On Christmas Eve, we had a sushi lunch and then headed over to Fascinations, where Jake bought me a sexy red Santa’s helper dress with white trim complete with jingle bells, a thong, and a Santa hat (sorry, I couldn’t right-click). Continued

Well, much like last year, I’ve been sick! About 5 folks from our office all got hit at the same time. So I’ve been drinking gallons of orange juice and eating nothing but bread – two things I usually avoid but which have been the only things I can stomach for the last 5 days. I’m finally on the mend enough to come in to work today and put out the inevitable fires that sprung up in my absence and which, apparently, I am the only one able to solve. The joys of being utterly indespensible, eh?
But I get to leave at 3 today, and Jake is probably leaving early as well. Then we have a four-day weekend, followed next week by a five-day weekend when we go to Vegas
for New Year’s! I’m totally stoked.

So, I’ve been helping one of my ex students from back in the day get into grad school. As a token of appreciation, he sent me a dozen gourmet chocolate covered strawberries from Shari’s Berries.

Jake and I always joke about the “gifts” love style because it seems funny to us…he does very much like to receive gifts, which I try to buy on a fairly consistent basis (for me, gifts are sort of an act of service in any case, so I am not too bad at giving them although I am far better at other things). He also likes to give gifts. When it comes to receiving actual physical gifts, it is very difficult for me to think of things that I would want, as I’ve said previously. But lately he’s found a way to sneak it in there. Continued

So, Lance has said that his new big interest is love styles. He’s mentioned it recently here and here, and I’ve also talked about it here (where I also link to other resources). Basically you’ve got physical touch, quality time, acts of service, words of affirmation, and gifts.
However, despite the fact that most of these sites (and most of what you hear) about love styles suggests that we have one preference that overrides all others, I don’t think that is the case. It’s obviously simpler to think that because I am primarily a physical touch girl, if my needs are being met in that area then I can be happy even if there are deficiencies in others. However, I think that while most of us may have one preferred love style, many people have hybrid love styles (where they need 2 almost equally), and I also think that practically everyone needs at least some of all five. You can’t have absolutely none of any one thing and be happy.
With that in mind, here’s a fun little exercise that you can talk about with your SO or first date this weekend:

So, yesterday was it – my 30th birthday, or (since Jake prefers Roman numerals for this), XXX.
I had a great day! Though it actually started Friday, when 10 of my co-workers joined me for one happy hour and then I went to another one with different folks afterwards – I had to turn down the many drinks I was offered so that I could, you know, drive home At work, cards and visits from everyone (I managed to escape cake and silly hats because it was the first day of school). My supervisor got me a Harkins gift card, so I’ll probably go see a movie this weekend.
On the downside, obviously facilities management didn’t care it was my birthday yesterday, because the a/c was broken and it was over 85 degrees in our building. Ugh. I was sweating like a pig, but since I had dinner reservations and I wanted to look nice, I was able to duck out early and cool off at my house. (The air’s fixed today, thank goodness.) Continued
