I used to try and get very involved when he would periodically have these spouts of "boredom," but I'm starting to put it back on him more because

1) I don't know when he's bored, and he often doesn't tell me until way after it starts,
2) I'm not bored because I have my own hobbies - I go to the gym a few times a week, cook for fun, run this blog, and am active in my sorority's alum club,
3) All his solutions involve spending an assload of money I don't have.

I do empathize with his situation (which is that it's hard to have hobbies on the side when you work 60-80 hours/week - I work strictly 40 and then I'm outta there), but while I can do things to make sure he's happy with me and satisfied with our relationship, I can't make him happy with his life. He has to do that himself.

Couple of interesting points in here. I'm not going to touch the financial stuff because I struggle with it, too, although I don't make nearly as much dough as Jake.

But his boredom complaint is a familiar one and definitely resonates with me. My take is that he needs something that causes something exciting to happen, and in fact he may need something that pushes him to the limit in some capacity (physical or mental). This doesn't necessarily mean new or different activities, because while these new activities are interesting, they don't have a huge physical or mental impact. I am precisely this way and this is why I train, row, and compete regularly because it pushes me to my limit. I got the same charge from coaching, also. Without this stimulus I get super duper cranky. Look for activities that are closer to the edge, and not necessarily something you guys can do together. Think parachuting and bungie jumping. I think him joining a sports league is a step in the right direction.
