Away We Go
By Honey on Jun 12, 2009 in Life
This has been a strange week. Per our recent agreement, the BF slept in the spare bedroom on two nights because he’d taken the “good” sleeping pills and didn’t want to reduce me to a hysterical, sleepless mess like he has in the past with his insane excessive snoring. So I feel like I am missing my snuggles! Fortunately, the BF is going to come home early tonight (which means before 8 p.m.) and cook me fish on the grill. Yum, I can’t wait!
I also didn’t see as much of him this week because I went with a dozen or so ladies from the alum club to see a sneak preview of a movie that opens today called Away We Go. I thought this movie was excellent – do yourselves a favor and go see it. Don’t be fooled by the description – it was written by Dave Eggers, whose memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, comes pretty darn close to living up to its title. In fact, once the credits started rolling and I saw he’d written it, I felt pretty dumb for not recognizing his writing 5 minutes into the movie. Which is what I said after the movie and none of the other ladies knew who Dave Eggers was.
Ooops.

In other extremely exciting news, my supervisor informed me that it was free for employees to apply to take classes, and that pushed me over the edge in my decision-making. I’ll be officially a “non-degree seeking” student by next week! I’ve e-mailed the professors for two communications courses, two political science courses, and one women’s studies course in an attempt to decide what I’ll be taking this fall.
Unfortunately, the most promising course (with the nicest professor) is full (Rhetoric and the Public Sphere) and another (Game Theory) was ruled out because they’re going to do the mathematical proofs and the professor said that differential equations and calculus would both be necessary. I don’t think so! We’ll see what happens, though I am interested in game theory long-term and may also register as non-degree-seeking at the undergrad level so I can take some advanced math classes. I’ll keep you posted!

Egger’s is awesome; so is his work with the 926 literature collectives. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy pirate, cape, and robot stores that serve as front ends for youth literature development with professional writers in the back?
My weekend plans include playing host to a bunch of people I don’t really like.
Such is the price we pay to maintain good social relations with useful individuals.

Oh, I’ve been looking forward to this movie coming out! It’s definitely on my to-do list.
Congrats on deciding to take classes again! I’m really excited for you and am uber-jealous of your tuition-free opportunity. Keep us posted on what you decide to take and how things are going.
Game theory kicked my ass sophomore year of college. The fact that it was at 9am on MWF and my teacher was like 85 didn’t help, but as a math and science person, I don’t recommend that you take it unless you’re really good at math (and enjoy it).

Well, I AM really good at math and DO enjoy it, but I don’t think that’s going to make up for the fact that I haven’t actually DONE any math in years (even my budget spreadsheet in Excel has the formulas programmed in so I don’t have to do anything…).
I am considering registering as non-degree at the undergrad level, too, so I can take some of those math classes. I don’t think a graduate-level game theory course is the place to start!
Dude, I think EVERYONE had that teacher for some subject in college. Argh, I feel ya
Just watch “A Beautiful Mind” and make lots of vague references in conversation to “the prisoner dilemma” and “the Nash equilibrium”.

And here I thought I could get away with “Alias” references. Sigh…
The Art of Strategy by Dixit and Nalebuff is a decent book on Game Theory. I didn’t find it as compelling as the reviews, but I’d be more than willing to ship it to you in exchange for a book I have not read. It does look pretty rad on my bookshelf.
I didn’t even know that movie existed. Dave Eggers and director Sam Mendes, that’s a killer combo. I’m adding it to the list.

I am hoping to get to go jog by a beach somewhere close to San Francisco and then go do some salsa dancing at night!! We’ll see I get to do it!
